Hogan Assessments: Predict Workplace Performance

Let me tell you about one of my favorite assessment tools that we use in our business, the Hogan Assessment.  The Hogan Assessment is an outstanding tool that almost anyone can use in their organization. The series consists of 3 different assessments. The Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI), Hogan Development Survey (HDS), and the Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI). Each assessment provides a different look at you and your performance.

  •  HPI is how most people would see and describe you.

  • HDS highlights the potential derailers that would potentially show up under stress and how people would say that you behave under stress

  • MVPI is how you describe yourself and what motivates you in the workplace.

This tool has become one of my favorite tools because of the 3 assessments and the ability to build a strong development plan. I am able to help a person understand how others describe them and what they might look like under stress. We can also determine if this workplace matches their motivations as well as to understand where there might be disconnects between their preferred style and the workplace.

I love to use this tool with willing learners. It is a great for leaders to understand their blind spots and how they can lead more effectively. It is also fantastic for using with teams to dive deeper and raise communications, morale, and performance.

Here’s some of the ways that we have used it with organizations and clients so far.

1. Help with recruiting:

First, create a job description and highlight the skills, experiences, and competencies required for the job. The assessment will help match people to the roles that you are hiring for. We will then work with the Hogan Company to validate your role but you would quickly be able to have people take the assessment and get a good read if they were a match.

2. Development

It can be used with all level employees but I tend to use it with managers and above to help them create a strong development plan. This is not an industry specific tool and can be used with non-profit to big to small companies.

3. Selection of high potentials

This is a great tool in the selection of high potentials in identifying the 1-2 things that the person will need to work on in a stretch assignment.

4. Executive coaching

I also love it for development and coaching conversations as it gives us a language to work on 1-2 critical areas for my clients.

5. Career planning

Finally, it is a great eye opener for people considering career changes to help them understand what to look for in jobs and a culture of organizations to help them thrive.
